Frequently
Asked Questions
- Do
I really need a summary on my
resume?
Yes, your summary is what reader's will use to
decide if they will invest the time in reading
your resume. It should clearly articulate "who
you are" and "what competencies you are
selling".
- My
Company was bought by a huge conglomerate. I am
making good money and my role seems secure but
while I used to love my job, I hate it now and
hate the culture of the new company. What can I
do?
First
of all, you need to spend some time exploring
you, assessing your skillsets and preferences.
It may be possible to re-invent yourself in your
"new" environment. It is going to be very
helpful for you to create a project plan that
will allow you to allocate time each week/month
on your job search and hold you accountable for
taking action in exploring your options. You can
do this quite discreetly: you can absolutely
manage an effective career transition while
still adding value in your current role. The key
is to have a plan with metrics and milestones so
you can hold yourself accountable for forward
motion. The end result of your "investigative"
work could be that you decide to stay with your
current organization. An informed decision based
on exploration versus by default can be both
liberating and motivating.
- I
have several team members reporting to me that
are constantly bickering and sniping at each
other. It has affected team morale, productivity
and collaboration. What can I
do?
Differences in personality, communication styles
and work styles can cause stress and turmoil
within organizations. The key is to cultivate an
environment that both respects and leverages
differences. You can have exceptionally talented
folks on your teams but they may have skill gaps
in terms of:
- Valuing
Diversity
- Flexing
their Communication Styles (oral and
written)
- Resolving
Conflict
I
suggest you invest time in your team's development
by building awareness and a common language to
discuss differences. Two assessment tools may be
helpful, Myers Briggs Type Indicator or Herrmann
Brain Dominance Indicator.
These
Assessments explore perceptions, work styles and
communicating differences and their impact in the
work
environment. |

Carve
out some time each week for thinking and planning.
Even if you can only spare 15 minutes to start it
is critical to get away from "fighting fires" and
ask yourself:
- "What
is going well?"
- "What
needs to change?"
- "What
am I overlooking?"
- "What
can I do differently next
week/month?"
- "Am
I happy in this "chapter" of my
life?"
Now
create a plan, allocate time in your calendar and
take
action. | |
