Susan
, Happy November!
As we head into
the whirlwind of the holiday season and with
worries over the economic situation, it can be
helpful to remind ourselves of Stephen Covey's
concept that we all have a circle of concern and a
circle of influence. We need to continually
remind ourselves to focus on our circle of
influence. Spend our time and efforts on things we
can control and influence and not so much time on
the issues that are out of our control and
influence.
There is a lot we can do
to:
- Keep our energy and
fitness levels high
- Take the reins of our
career and develop ourselves, (we need to
solicit actionable feedback to do so) Grow your
reports into a high performing, reliable and
highly collaborative team
- Resolve conflict and
issues so they don't drain your energy and lower
your team's morale.
- Be proactive and get
ready for a planned or unplanned career
transition.

A
Social Media Conversation with Suzan Czajkowski,
Social Media Marketing & Communication
Coach Q: Susan, from
your perspective why is it important for
professionals to have an on-line
presence?
A:
It is important for corporate leaders &
managers to have a presence in social media to
support their own continued advancement as well as
to represent their current position. Use LinkedIn
to connect to people all around you in the
organization, especially those above you,
strengthening your network and staying plugged in
at a deeper level. Occasionally post updates to
keep others informed about your recent
experiences, and maintain your profile, which
serves as a brief version of your resume, always
available for anyone to see.
In career
transition, the first place most people go to get
information is the Internet. Many employers search
for potential employees through linked In and some
even check references there. It is important for
people (colleagues, employers, and friends) to be
able to find each other, so having an online
presence is critical. Leveraging your LinkedIn
connections to learn more about a particular
company or industry can be enormously
helpful.
Q: From your perspective
what are some of the mistakes you see folks making
on-line?
A: For
anyone in a corporate leadership or management
position, it's tempting to set up a social media
account and then just let it sit and never use it.
Even if you don't think you'll need the benefits
of the account in the short run, I recommend that
you make sure you don't let your profile lay
dormant for too long. While I'm talking about
LinkedIn specifically, this is actually true
regardless of which social media system you've
chosen. Touch your profile at least every couple
of weeks by posting a status update, responding to
someone else's post, or connecting to one or two
new people. That small amount of activity allows
you to be found more readily when others are
conducting online searches that resonate with your
profile. The more often you touch your account,
the more priority the social media system will
give your profile. Also, should you suddenly
decide that you need your social media account for
some serious networking, you won't have to work
too hard to leverage it because it's already in
place.

What
My Clients Are Saying!
I consulted with Kim
Coburn and The Coburn Company regarding personal career
planning and exploring new career strategies. With Kim's
guidance and coaching I was able to successfully define
and launch a career growth strategy which leveraged my
core background, experience and skill set while greatly
expanding my opportunities, my professional development
and my business acumen.
Unlike some career and
life coaches, Kim combines career and life coaching with
a business-minded approach so that the results can be
more immediately and seamlessly integrated with career
search activities. I was and continue to be very
pleased with the results... new, exciting and lucrative
career options which emphasized my strengths and the
things I enjoyed doing without the drawbacks of
"starting all over" in mid-career.
I would recommend The
Coburn Company and Kim Coburn to any individual or
organization seeking advice, coaching, training or
customized solutions involving career management,
leadership development, resolving conflict, building
teams and navigating change.
